Lowpoly crafts coffee grounds-based 3D printed furniture

In the heart of , within the historic Casa Calvet designed by Antoni Gaudí, D·Origen Coffee Shop introduces the world’s first incorporating elements made from coffee grounds. This innovative space, designed by Gianluca Pugliese of LOWPOLY, uses the pioneering LOWIMPACT® material, a blend of recycled PLA and coffee grounds. The project exemplifies the sustainable of coffee waste, transforming it into functional design elements.

The coffee shop features custom furniture including counters, , and , crafted to blend seamlessly with the historic architecture. The counters, a focal point of the design, are made from LOWIMPACT® material, showcasing the unique amber textures that, when backlit, create captivating light effects. This material, containing 98% organic content, is biodegradable and petroleum-free, combining recycled coffee grounds with various polymers for different color tones and textures.

LOWPOLY’s project demonstrates innovative circular design

The architectural vision, inspired by the fluidity of coffee, translates sensory experiences into tangible forms. Collaborating with designer Arturo Tedeschi, employed artificial intelligence and parametric design to create an environment that engages the senses beyond the visual. The geometrically coherent lamps complement the counters, completing the harmonious design of the space.

Production utilized advanced 3D printing techniques with large-format printers and modified Rev3rd extruders, capable of handling high-organic-content materials. Industrial robotic arms ensured precision in crafting the bespoke pieces, resulting in five unique elements that define the coffee shop’s aesthetic.

D·Origen Coffee Shop is not just a place to enjoy coffee but a demonstration of circular design principles. The use of recycled coffee grounds in design addresses significant environmental issues, offering a sustainable alternative to traditional materials. This project highlights the potential for innovative materials in design and construction, setting a new standard for sustainability in the specialty coffee industry.
