He said: “Maybe you like being cheap and gross, in which case put these things in your home, but personally I don’t want my home to look cheap.”

Generic art

The first thing on Nick’s list is generic art and quotes, such as canvases of animals or flowers that you might find in Ikea.

He said: “They look boring, they look like you don’t care”.

The designer said that if you can’t afford to buy a unique piece of art, or don’t want to make your own, it’s fine to just leave your wall blank.

Cropped curtains

Nick said that cropped curtains make your home look cheap.

He said: “If you hang them a bit higher and make them touch the floor, your space will look much more luxurious.

“Most importantly, they make the room look taller”.

No texture

The interior designer said that a lot of people don’t understand texture, but said it can be a “wonderful thing”.

One overhead light

Nick said that having just one overhead light shows that you don’t care about your space.

He said: “Interesting lighting can be so cheap, you can get it off Amazon”.

He added that having a number of lamps in the room helps to add ambience.

Everything too small

Nick said that really small rugs and works of art make your house look cheap.

He said: “Choosing a tiny rug is just going to look like a little postage stamp in the middle of the room.

“It’s better to save up to buy a bigger rug that is going to fit in the room”.

Shiny glossy surfaces

Nick said that glossy surfaces on furniture such as kitchen cupboards look really cheap.

“I would just say that mixing these in with other pieces with more texture will make your home look much nicer.

Cheap flooring

The interior designer said that laminate flooring looks cheap.

He said that laminate starts to wear in time, and ends up looking very fake.

“Real natural materials that come from nature are always going to look more luxurious”.

2024’s Top Trending Colours for Interior Design

Homebase has revealed the official trending colours for this year.

To predict the top shades of 2024, sales data at Homebase analysed 5 colours that have surged in popularity with customers.

Copper, pink and black are predicted to be the hottest colours on Brit’s walls this year, while bathrooms are seeing a surprising rise in terracotta colour schemes.

The top five trending colours for 2024 are:

  1. Copper (+57%)
  2. Pink (+38%)
  3. Black (+34%)
  4. Green (+29%)
  5. Orange (+27%)

Copper has replaced rose gold, whilst blush is the new magnolia, and Brits are also going bold by slapping black paint all over their walls.

Green is always popular colour, but the shade ‘Fresh Herb’ – a versatile, pale grey-toned green – is hitting hundreds of customers baskets.

Meanwhile, terracotta is taking over with ‘Frosted Papaya’, a peachy orange shade dominating bathrooms.

Wimpy baseboards

Nick said that “wimpy baseboards” make your home look cheap.

He said that upgrading them to something taller and more substantial can make the space look “really beautiful”.

Matching everything

Nick said that it is good to have furniture pieces that are similar, but that are not exactly the same.

He said that having all of your furniture completely matching makes it look boring and uninteresting.

“Have a little fun”, he said.

Open shelving

Nick said that there is no reason to have so many of your belongings on display on open shelves as it makes it look cluttered and messy.
